Designing/Modifying a Model Profile

The logical structure of the Visual HELP interface facilitates a very quick learning curve that allows you to generate and modify a typical profile in just minutes. In many cases, the most difficult and time-consuming task you will have is deciding what to name the project files. The following section provides a description of the steps involved in creating a hydrologic profile model using Visual HELP's advanced model generation tools.

From the Project Tree View

Once the project information has been entered, your project will appear in the Project Tree View (see figure below). This tree view allows you to have easy access to multiple projects, multiple profiles within a single project, and all data associated with each profile. The default EPA profile contains a landfill layer configuration with typical properties that are recommended by the EPA as a starting point for your profile. The layer types for the default profiles are shown in the above figure. Each layer type has a specific set of properties associated with it which can be accessed from the Project Tree as shown for the 'coarse sand' layer in the figure. Each of these properties can be easily viewed and modified by double-clicking on the property in the Project Tree View.

The Profile View

The Profile View provides a graphic representation of the model profile and allows you to graphically modify the layer geometry using standard drag-and-drop methods. The Profile View also allows you to add and delete layers, and view and edit the properties associated with each layer using the right mouse button. When you insert or delete a layer, you have the option of either fixing the top elevation or the bottom elevation of the profile.

Modifying Layer Properties

In addition to being able to easily add, resize and delete layers, Visual HELP makes it simple to change the properties of different natural and artificial materials used in landfill design. Simply double-click on one of the layer materials listed in the Project Tree and the following window will appear. This window displays all of the properties of the selected layer.

Changing Layer Group Settings

Visual HELP provides you with the tools to group adjacent layers together and modify the function and/or common properties of these layers in a single operation. This is very convenient for assigning properties (e.g., 'slope') to groups of layers that serve a single purpose (such as a landfill cap).
